So much malt. So little time.
Sigh. Malty beers continue to give me fits. This was another failed pairing. Again, the beer was excellent, and the food was good. But put them together and… ugh.
Eggenberg is the same brewery that produced the famed Samichlaus, the strongest lager in the world. It’s also the only Austrian brewery I’m familiar with.
Tonight I went for the Doppelbock, also a lager. It’s a well done doppelbock, thickly malty and a bit sweet. Only a faint trace of hops.
And it has no business sitting on the same table as a pizza.
The pizza is another of my Costco purchases. They have some really solid stuff at good prices. Beyond your typical tomato-based sauce, shredded mozzarella and some tomatoes, the defining aspects of this pizza are the mozzarella “pearlini” (little balls of mozzarella), pesto, and asiago cheese.
Pretty firkin good for something out of the freezer. Of course I say that about all the freezer-derived foodstuffs I consume. Because I’m picky about which frozen foods I buy.
I almost went Sweetwater IPA on this, and I’m sure that would have been primo. But I keep hoping to find malty pairing heaven, and I keep ending up somewhere below purgatory.
