This past weekend, the family visited one of our favorite local haunts, Diplomat Deli. It is a sandwich shop in Vestavia Hills that also has one of the biggest selections of beer in town. When you enter, immediately facing you is a wall of coolers with nearly every style and brewery available in Birmingham represented. I discovered a beer previously unavailable in the state and knew I had to try it at some point–Monty Python’s Holy Grail Ale. Kitschy, I know, but why not? I ordered a chicken salad sandwich which consisted of whipped up chicken with just a little mayo and lots of pepper. The sandwich itself had raisin toast, tomato, and your choice of lettuce or sprouts. I chose sprouts. The interesting thing about this combo was that the beer, which is technically an English Pale Ale, and is remarkably similar to an ESB (Is there a difference?), brought out the cinnamon in the raisin bread extremely well.
My wife ordered the chili. Chili with an ESB/English Pale Ale–this should be a no-brainer, I thought. Wrong. Initially the two worked together, but after a few bites and a few sips, I felt I was getting a filmy feeling in my mouth that neither more beer nor more chili seemed to help. I went back to my chicken salad sandwich and the world was right again. Was it the breadiness of the beer? The noble hops? Or was it fond memories of “Tim,” Killer Rabbits, and the Knights who say “Ni”? My guess is it was the former two, although I wouldn’t rule out the latter.
